There is a limited, but growing body of work on these topics around the globe. Below we provide brief details and links to key projects which we are aware of.
Seattle - Salmonoid habitat enhancement and restoration experiments. More information can be found here.
Sydney - Measuring the effects of urban structures on biota and testing ways of enhancing ecological habitat. More information can be found here.
DELOS - Past project evaluating the impact of low-crested coastal defence structures on biota. More information can be found on the profject website - www.delos.unibo.it.
Urbane - Current project examining the potential for enhancing the biodiversity value of rock armour structures, Wales, UK. More information can be found on the website - www.urbaneproject.org.
Theseus - Innovative technologies for safer European coasts in a changing climate
Work Package 3 is designed to examine how best coastal protection can be managed by enhancing natural processes. More information can be found on the prokect website - www.theseusproject.eu.
Vancouver - The new Vancouver Convention Centre is employing a novel design to create artificial reef habitat (called a 'habitat skirt'). The pre-cast concrete structure provides a series of ledges with exposed aggregate surfaces (similar to those tested in our own project) to encourage rapid colonisation. More information can be found here.
ECOncretetech is an Israeli company that specialises in manufacturing ecologically favourable concrete products for coastal engineering applications.
